At Rocky Ridge Farm, Mountain Horses are our passion. The Mountain Horses early days stem from the hills of KY where the course of 200 years a steady, smooth gaited, sturdy horse type of horse was developed. They were surefooted to handle the rocky rough terrain. They were easy keepers, able to withstand the cold winters and hard living conditions. They were sturdy, and of even temper, willing to work hard. They served many purposes, from pulling a plow to providing a swift smooth ride when needed. It wasn't until the current century that breeders and fanciers got together to form several registries and associations to help promote, and maintain these wonderful horses. We now have four recognized breeds of Mountain Horses: Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horses, Mountain Pleasure Horses, Rocky Mountain Horses©,and Spotted Mountain Horses. Modern times sees the Mountain Horse's now spending time as steady trail mounts, endurance horses, and show horses, and even some that are still working on the farm and ranch. Their versatility, smooth gait, gentleness, and "puppy dog" attitude is gaining them fans in every area. At Rocky Ridge Farm we specialize in a dual purpose, smooth gaited, high quality Mountain Horse. All of our horses are trained to be user-friendly trail mounts, but with the gait and style to be successful in the show ring as well. Our love of this breed has caused us to delve into helping others learn about the Mountain Horses and find their own special "dream horse". If you aren't quite ready to buy, but would like to learn to ride gaited horses and experience the magic of the mountain horse breed first hand, our lesson programs may be of interest to you. We welcome you to visit our horses both on these pages and at our farm. Feel free to contact us with any questions about the Mountain Horses or riding gaited horses in general. We look forward to helping you! |
